Thailand in April - Time to Get Wet & Mild
“You better watch out, you better not cry, it’s April in Thailand and I’ll tell you why.
Songkran festival is coming to town.”
The classic Christmas jingle/warning would fit in well for Thailand in the month of April. April in Thailand is simply no ordinary month - it is exceptionally hot, water is in high demand and it won’t just be for hydration - the festival of Songkran is around the corner, holding a squirt gun.
Song-what? Is it like a big deal?
It’s Songkran (pronounced “song” & “crun” as in crunchy), and it marks the Thai New Year. So yes, it’s a really big deal. It runs from 13 to 15 April 2018 and the Tourism Authority of Thailand plans extensive festivities around this event every year. Corporations all over Thailand capitalise on the massive movement within the country with offers from free parking at the airport to even free car inspections.

What can I do? Where can I take part?
If you’re in Thailand during this period, congratulations! You’re automatically part of the celebrations. Don’t be surprised if you get water splashed on you - it’s all part of the fun and blessings. You can get into the swing of things and start spraying water on others as well! Greet “Sawadee pee mai” (Happy New Year) as you do so! There are many places to fully experience this and a few Songkran tips & tricks are always handy. Just remember, the Thais are a respectful community and always keep your manners at all times.
Sounds hectic - I don’t want to get wet :(
If you want to be a wet blanket (heh) instead, it’s fine too! You can still find fun and feel cool on your own terms around Thailand. If it gets too hot in Bangkok, there's a Snow Town you could check out. In the nearby town of Pattaya, get soaked at the four awesome water parks available. If you’re in Chiang Mai, maybe rafting or kayaking can get you that fix.
There’s a variety of options for everyone to get into the Songkran spirit - it’s up to you if you want to take a walk on the wild side or just keep it mild.
