Family Fun in Kuala Lumpur

A family trip is always an amazing experience. However, it can sometimes be difficult to keep both adults and children entertained. This can be an especially big challenge in a foreign land, but it is completely doable, especially in Kuala Lumpur.

KL, as it’s fondly referred to by locals, is a safe and stimulating place for family travel. This South East Asian country makes traveling with children a breeze. From amazing sights, to bustling markets, to forest adventures, and good old-fashioned theme parks - there’s no way the kids will be bored. Adults will also love joining in the fun!

Make your Malaysia trip the most memorable one by following our suggestions on fun family activities in Kuala Lumpur.

1) Petronas Towers

Between 1994 and 2004 the Petronas Towers were the tallest buildings in the world. They have since been surpassed by Taipei 101 (in Taiwan), but today they still remain as the tallest twin skyscrapers in the world. The Petronas Towers gained even more international recognition after they were featured in the 1999 film Entrapment, staring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

The Petronas Towers are an awesome sight, whether it’s day or night. However, the buildings look especially magical after dark when they’re all lit up. The building’s style pays homage to the country’s Islamic beliefs with the domed roofs, the spires reminiscent of mosque minarets, and the steel and glass building design resembling Islamic art motifs.

While the towers are incredibly impressive looking from the ground up, there’s no comparison to actually being up there. Parents and kids will both love the double-decker sky bridge, the tallest two-story bridge in the world at 170-meters. Study the towers’ architecture up close and gaze out across the entire city; it’s the best bird’s eye view in KL.

2) Sunway Lagoon Theme Park

Take a day off from sightseeing and bring the kids to Kuala Lumpur’s best theme park. Sunway Lagoon is actually made up of five different sections: it’s a water park, amusement park, scream park, extreme park, and wildlife park all rolled into one.

In the Waters of Africa, kids can cruise along in the manmade river, catch waves at Malaysia’s first surf simulator, or zip along water slides at 40mph.

Scare-zones, haunted houses, and a horror theater compose the Scream Park. The Wild Wild West and World of Adventure offer up all the thrill rides as well as the chance for kids to interact with a variety of wildlife. Adrenaline junkies can get their paintball, go-kart, bungee jump, and rock climbing fix in the Extreme Park. Animal lovers will adore the Wildlife Park with 150 different species in different interactive displays. There’s also educational attractions and live-animal shows.

Clearly, Sunway Lagoon offers something for every kid of every kind. There’s a 0% chance of boredom in this place!

3) KL Upside Down House

This double-story house is the first and tallest of its kind in Malaysia. And yes, the whole thing has been built entirely upside down. The vintage yellow car mounted upside down across the entrance gate welcomes visitors to what will surely be a backwards experience.

Visitors will immediately notice that this house stands on its pointed roof. Tour the house, walk through each room, and go up (or is it down?) the stairs to explore the different rooms. Inside you’ll find multiple bedrooms, a living room, bathroom, dining room, kitchen, and even an attic all built in a completely topsy-turvy fashion. And that’s not all - everything inside the house is upside down as well. Just picture this: tables, chairs - even the toilet - on the ceiling and lights on the floor.

4) KL Forest Eco Park

Bet you didn’t think you’d find a rainforest smack dab in the middle of a bustling capital city. That’s part of what makes the KL Forest Eco Park such a cool commodity. Here you’ll find over 9-hectares of beautiful greenery and wildlife residing in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. This forest has been a protected reserve since 1906, making it one of the oldest in the country.

The highlight of the Eco Park is the Canopy Walk, a bridge suspended 200-meters off the ground. This enchanting treetop walkway is a wonderful way to take in the views of the surrounding city skyline as well as view birds, insects, and other wildlife. The walking trails on the ground are an easy 300-500 meters in length, making them ideal for young children.

Bonus: Entrance is free and includes a tour of the Menara KL Tower, a nearby attraction in its own right.

5) Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Garden

Conveniently located near the city center, the Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Garden (AKA Butterfly Garden KL) is one of the largest of its kind. The park can best be described as a butterfly zoo. It houses over 6,000 butterflies of 120 species, many of which are native to Malaysia.

The park is beautifully lush and green, with manicured gardens and exotic plants, trees, ferns, and ponds.

The butterflies fly lazily around, resting on the plants and making them easily viewable. There are also containers full of flower petals that have been sprayed with honey and water - butterflies flock to these areas, creating some great photo opps. They aren’t shy either - they may come and rest on you, too!

There is also an insect museum on the grounds, displaying giant beetles and amazingly camouflaged stick insects.

6) Chinatown

Based on Petaling Street (Jalan Petaling), China Town is a bright, bustling area with loads of souvenir shopping and cheap eats. This is the part of town where visitors will see the clear influence that Chinese culture has in Kuala Lumpur.

From strings of bobbing Chinese lanterns, bargain market shopping, knock-off designer duds, and authentic Chinese-Malay street food - there is something to keep everyone occupied. Wander around the street market and the surrounding area to get a real taste of the Oriental side of Kuala Lumpur.

At first glance, you may not think Kuala Lumpur is a suitable city for a family trip. The surface can be deceiving. Enormous shopping malls, gridlock traffic, and street hustlers can give foreign visitors a wary impression, especially when traveling with children. However, beneath the superficial stuff, KL is actually filled with fun, educational, and cultural activities that everyone in the family can enjoy. If you’ve been hesitant to visit Malaysia’s capital - don’t. You’ll be pleasantly surprised with all it has to offer!
