Kuala Lumpur is a vibrant city full of exciting things to do and see. While maintaining its culture and heritage, Kuala Lumpur showcases a modern city enveloping the latest of architecture and technology. Tourists will experience the fast and the slow pace all at the same time whilst in the same place.  While there are many places of interests to visit or just simply spending a day shopping in the city, it is advisable to be cautious of one’s safety as it is in any other metropolitan city in the world.  As a foreigner in the city, you should be aware of some safety tips to keep you safe at all times.

The roads are busy with motorists as well as pedestrians, therefore, always keep your handbag close to you with a firm clutch of your hand. Be alert at all times for motorcyclists when you are walking or crossing the road as sometimes they can just appear out of the blue. Carry smaller handbags rather than large ones as a smaller bag will be easier to hold closer to you.

While dining in food outlets, place your bag on your lap and not on the seat next to you. Do not leave your bag unattended when you are away from your seat.  Wallets or passports should not be left on the table top.

Try not to wear any expensive jewellery when walking around the town.  Walk in the opposite direction of the traffic flow so that you will be able to see what is moving in front of you.  Try not to talk on the handphone when you are walking on the road, always find an indoor spot.  Do not carry all your cash or credit card in your bag but rather keep it in your pocket.  Whenever approached by a stranger asking you to exchange some money, do not oblige as they may mislead you and end up taking your cash without you noticing it.

Do not walk on lonely roads and back alleys alone even though it may be the shortest route to your destination.  It would be best to take a taxi ride back to your hotel when you’re carrying a lot of shopping bags.

When you take a taxi ride, do write down the license plate of the taxi, taxi company name and the driver’s name as it would come in handy if you left something valuable in the car.  The hotel will be able to assist you by calling the taxi company to locate your lost item.  Most taxis use the meter but if you happen to flag one that does not then you might want to let it go and take another.  If you’re taking the monorail or light rail transit that is fully loaded with people, it is always better to keep your wallet in front of you rather than in your back pocket.

With those safety tips in mind, have an enjoyable time in Kuala Lumpur and most of all, stay safe!
