Exploring Sun Moon Lake On A Day Trip In Taiwan

ExploringsunmoonlakedaytriptaiwanCover-900x606

Nestled between the mountains of Taiwan, Sun Moon Lake is the biggest body of water within the country. Stand from a lookout point and you’ll see exactly where its name derives, from the east of the lake comes the sun, and the west a moon shaped crescent. As city breaks go, it’s the perfect refresh from the bustle of city life and although there are a plethora of activities on offer, it’s hard not to be captivated by its stunningly bright blue waters.

Coming from the city of Taichung (recommended) purchase a combo bus ticket from Nantou Bus Company, located just a few steps away from Taichung’s bus and train station. There is a variety to choose from, just pick and choose according to your plans. Keep in mind, the journey from Taichung takes approximately 90 minutes – start your day early to fully enjoy the lake’s offerings.

Take a yacht across the lake

After a couple of teasing glimpses of the lake from the bus, you’ll be itching to take a dip in its waters. Unfortunately, aside from a mass swimming event taking place in September every year, this is not permitted. The next best option? Take a yacht across the lake and engulf yourself with the shimmering waters.

Visit Xuanzang temple

Learn a little more about ancient Chinese history within the serenity of Xuanzang Temple. A stone carving depicting Buddhist monk Xuanzang’s Journey to the West stands impressively outside. The story of the monk’s perilous journey to bring sacred Buddhist texts back to China is fictional but remains one of the most influential pre-modern works in China today.

Hike to Ci'en Pagoda

Take the short hike to Ci’en Pagoda – then a short climb up to its top for the ultimate panoramic view of the lake. Built by President Chiang Kai-shek in memory of his mother, the pagoda itself is 46 meters tall and rises impressively 1000 meters above sea level.

Beautifully tranquil, it’s not hard to see why this spot was favoured by the late president –in fact, the building behind the pagoda was used as a rest house during his visits. Come during the right season and you’ll also be able to catch a glimpse of the fireflies.

Experience aboriginal culture at Ita Thao Pier

According to folklore, ancestors of the Ita Thao tribe chased a magnificent white deer from Alishan down to what we now recognize as Sun Moon Lake. Finding the lake plentiful in fish, they decided to make their new home here.

Although the number of Thao people are gradually diminishing, Ita Thao culture can still be richly experienced here. From tasting delicious aboriginal food to watching Ita Thao tribe performances at the cultural centre, this area of the lake is a favourite amongst many.

If you’re seeking more thrills, take the short cable car ride up to the Formosan Aboriginal Cultural Village where you can get your adrenaline rushing via its range of amusement rides. Aside from roller coasters, explore and learn more about Taiwan’s indigenous tribes as you walk through the small communities settled here.

Wenwu Temple

Visiting Wenwu Temple in the past, one would have had to paddle a boat across the lake before embarking on a long flight of stairs to finally reach the temple. Luckily there is now no need to scale the 366 steps leading to Wenwu, but each step does represent birthdays of celebrities (and even cartoon characters)!

Once two temples, during Japanese colonization, plans to raise the water level of the lake to lead to the relocation and eventual combination of the temples to make Wenwu. It now draws locals and tourists alike to pray or admire the building’s fascinating architecture. Wenwu’s intricately carved fountain has also become a piece of interest to visitors, toss a coin and make a wish when you visit.

Scenic bike ride along the lakeside to end the day

What better way to end the day than with a scenic cycle along the waters of the lake, the setting sun creating a spectacular backdrop as you ride. There are many bike rentals dotted around the lake, just pick one and go!

With numerous bike routes taking you around the lake, it’s only a matter of choosing one and setting off. It takes one day to cycle around the entirety of the lake, but if you’re short on time, choose a turning point to stop and relax before heading back. From tandem to electric, this activity is suitable for all members of the family to enjoy!
