One of the beauties about traveling in Taiwan is everything is reachable in a snap of fingers. Kenting and the coastline of Hualien are the classics, but if you fancy a quick visit to a beach in a day from the capital of Taiwan, these places are just a train ride away!

Yeliu Geopark

If you ask any local in Taipei to recommend a one-day getaway from the city with unique scenic views, Yeliu GeoPark is the answer. Stretching approximately 1.7 kilometers from Datun Mountains to the sea, Yeliu GeoPark boosts its diversity of rock formations, such as “Queen’s Head,” “Fairy Shoes,” “Beehives,” “Mushrooms” and “Sea Candles.”

These unique rock formations come from erosion of limestones by wind, waves and the sea, making Yeliu GeoPark such an alien landscape. Yeliu is instagrammable; good for couples, friends, family and solo travelers!

To get to Yeliu, take Taipei MRT to Tamsui station, transfer to shuttle bus 862 and get off at Yeliu GeoPark stop.

The GeoPark opens from 8:00 till 17:00. Entry ticket is NT$80 for adults and NT$40 for children. There are free guided tours at 10:00, 10:30, 14:00 and 14:30.

With the growing popularity among tourist, the authority has strictly imposed regulations on visitors. Do take notes and don’t touch, lean or climb the rocks!

Baishawan

Baishawan stands for “white sand bay” in Mandarin thanks to the fine, clean beach. If you fancy swimming, surfing and some water activities around the north coast, Baishawan is one of the top choices with easy access and shops around.

Aside from the clean fine sands at Baishawan, the intertidal zone is also a highlight. During low tide, small fish and other sea creatures are usually trapped for few hours until the next high tide comes.

To get to Baishawan, take Taipei MRT to Tamsui station, transfer to shuttle bus 862 or 863 and get off at Baishawan stop.

Bear in mind that water activities are not be allowed during winter, the best time to visit Baishawan is between May and September.

Qianshuiwan

Qianshuiwan has been known for coastal bike paths just between Sanzhi and Shimen areas. Aside from cycling, Qianshuiwan is also a popular spot for picnics, strolling, and chilling at pubs along the beach.

Qianshuiwan also has the intertidal zone just like Baishawan with few water activities available. It is a rather relaxing area and a perfect escape from the city.

To get to Qianshuiwan, take Taipei MRT to Tamsui station, transfer to 860, 861, 862, or 863 and get off at Qianshuiwan stop.

Longdong Bay

The word Longdong literally means Dragon Cave in Mandarin. Why? Longdong Bay is the largest bay in the northeast coast and right at its southern edge, lies a sandstone cliff Longdong.

Longdong attracts not only rock climbers but also snorkelers thanks to its clear water and rich marine life.

If you enjoy snorkeling and want to give Londong a try, make sure to check with the local shops in advance, as they only let out gears if the weather is safe for snorkeling.

Do wear or rent proper diving suits and shoes to immerse yourself in the clear blue water and schools of colorful tropical fish. The rocks around Longdong could be sharp. Wearing bikinis, shorts or flip-flops would not work and might leave you with injuries.

To get to Longdong Bay, take the train to Keelung Railway Station, transfer to Keelung Bus towards Fulong and get off at Longdong Bay Coastal Park stop.

Bali Left Bank Park

Located a ferry-ride away from Tamsui, Bali Left Bank Park remains a less known path for travelers. Although it’s right across Tamsui, the atmosphere of Bali is very different. It kept the traditional view of fishing and farming village, comparing to the commercialized Tamsui.

Cycling around Bali, you’ll get to see the fishing village view, local food and shops, and Shisanhang Museum.

Fulong

Believe it or not, Fulong has been a resort since Japanese occupation! Nowadays, Fulong is still a popular destination in summer. People come for Fulong not only for the soft golden beach and water activities but also for various festivals throughout summer, namely Fulong Sand Sculpture Festival and Hohaiyan Rock Festival.

To get to Fulong, take Taiwan Railway from Taipei Main Station to Fulong Train Station. Although Fulong is a public beach, it is management by a corporation and the opening hours are from 8:00 till 17:00 on regular days. Opening hours are extended during festivals.
